What Happened To Me?
What Happened To Me?
As some of you may know already I'm a roller derby coach. I've skated for about 5-6 years now and consider myself a pretty advanced skater. None of that matters though because (and I can't say this often enough) I DID NOT HURT MYSELF PLAYING ROLLER DERBY. =D I got it going to a skate park and falling off a ramp. I broke my ankle and fell back breaking the upper part of my fibula and the rest of the details are as follows...
10 AM (ish) April 5, 2015 - Fell while (roller) skating at a skate park
11 AM (ish) April 5, 2015 - Went to the ER
4:44 PM April 5, 2015 - Was told I would need surgery that week as bones could not be set properly (likely due to torn tendons in the way)
7 AM April 9, 2015 - Surgery to implant screws/plate
I don't have a scan of the original ankle break and it's hard to see anyway... I fell breaking my ankle in a few places and my fibula close to my kneecap. Let's just say it wasn't the best day ever.
Little did I know that along with a broken leg I was going to get a serious education about what it's like to be disabled in America today. Below you can see the X-rays of my plate/screws that I got put into my ankle by a doctor who, while I've been assured is "The. BEST. Like THE one you want..." had the personality of a pit viper.
I'll post more about my ER/Hospital Visit(s) in a later post. Here's the blurry post-up surgery pic:
The results look as follow:
To get to the point of all this... I've been disabled now for almost 3 months and it's been one of the most educational experiences of my life. I wanted to create and post to this blog to let people know the differences I've experienced as a person with a disability. Thankfully mine is only temporary but it has given me and those around me new insight into the thoughts behind all kinds of decisions. This will be a little about my journey back into being able-bodied again but mostly will be a tomb of things I've learned and unexpected experiences I've had during this time.
